Soft Washing & Power Washing: Are They the Same Thing?

There is a clear distinction between soft and power washing techniques. Both employ the same type of equipment but the differences lie in the water pressure, temperature and use of cleaning chemicals. So, why do we need two choices for professionally cleaning surfaces? Here we explore what each service involves and when to choose one over the other. 

The Soft Washing Technique

Soft washing uses a low-pressure method of less than 500 PSI (pounds per square inch) for cleaning and rinsing applications. The pressure is reduced by using a wide spray tip making it the right choice for surfaces that can be easily damaged by traditional power washing. 

Soft washing uses chemicals at low concentrations to safely clean while also slowing down the regrowth of algae, moss and mold. The solution is sprayed on all areas that need to be cleaned and allowed to sit and dissolve dirt and growth before the final rinse.

Soft washing is the best choice for surfaces such as:

  • Roofs
  • Windows and window screens
  • Vinyl siding
  • Wood siding, fences and decks
  • Stucco or brick


NOTE: Soft washing is recommended for any hardscapes less than 3 years old.

The Power Washing Technique

Power washing uses hot water and extremely high pressure of approximately 3100 PSI. The pressure is adjusted by narrowing the spray tip and thus increasing the intensity of the water. 

The heat and force of power washing delivers a deep cleaning of durable surfaces and can even remove sticky and greasy substances. Dirt, grime and organic growth are blasted away with a single wash. 

Power washing is the best choice for surfaces such as:

  • Concrete or paved driveways 
  • Concrete or paved sidewalks and walkways
  • Paving Stones
  • Wood surfaces being prepared for new paint or stain


NOTE: Power washing should only be used on hardscapes that are more than 3 years old. Newer surfaces should be cleaned with soft washing.
